The Progressive Era are probably the most talented group of teenagers to break in to the mainstream of underground rap, yes we know that’s a paradox, for almost two decades. We’re probably missing someone so let us know if we are but the point is that Joey Bada$$ and his fellow Pro Era MCs have in a lot of ways “resurrect[ed] the boom bap from the tombs” to quote the man himself. Using beats from the likes of MF DOOM, Statik Selektah, J Dilla and Lord Finesse with rhymes that struck a chord with underground rap fans with a nostalgic view to the 1990s, his first mixtape 1999 was one of the best debuts in recent years.
The teenager from Brooklyn is now back with his second project (well third if you count Rejex but those were a collection of songs recorded before the release of 1999 that didn’t make the cut). Summer Knights is a free album that you can stream and download below. Originally intended as an EP due for release in June, the project grew in scope and is now a full album featuring 95 Til Infinity and #LongLiveSteelo, a tribute to fellow Pro Era member Capital Steez who passed away just as Pro Era were coming to the fore.

If you need any convincing of Joey’s ability, the above endorsement from Flying Lotus should seal the deal.
