Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One are Tuxedo. The duo of singer/songwriter/DJ Mayer Hawthorne and Seattle-based hip hop producer supremo Jake One have come together to release their joint self-titled debut. Tuxedo is a mash-up groovy funk and disco sounds that come together to make you feel like you’ve been transported back in time by several decades. The duo have been friends for a number of years but the beginnings of Tuxedo began a couple of years ago when the pair released a very well-received three track EP. The 12-track album will be released on March 3rd 2015 marking Mayer Hawthorne’s return to Stones Throw Records and Jake One’s first outing with the label. You can stream the whole album via NPR‘s First Listen series including the track Number One.
“We always wondered what the original sample was for Snoop’s ‘Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None)’. Since we couldn’t figure it out, we decided we would make it.” – Tuxedo on making Number One.
We thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing, regularly snapping our fingers along with the upbeat tracks; can’t wait to grab it on vinyl for Rhyme On Beat headquarters. If NPR deactivate the link after the album’s release, you can check out some of the tracks below. Tuxedo are currently touring the United States, get all the event details via Stones Throw and pre-order it digitally via iTunes.
