26/09/2015 UPDATE: Meow The Jewels is out now, you can download it from runthejewels.net with “the limited edition, specially-packaged tawny brown vinyl version (with actual faux fur RTJ hands), out this November”.
How do you follow-up two incredible albums that hit the rap game like a shot of adrenaline to the heart? Make a remix album using cat sounds of course.
Run The Jewels‘ self-titled debut and Run The Jewels 2 were not only incredible albums musically speaking, as a result the pair of Killer Mike and El-P have garnered a huge following as a result. Always heroes of the underground who have paid their dues many times over, the RTJ projects, and to some extent Mike’s R.A.P. Music which was also wholly produced by El-P, brought them to the attention of the mainstream. Soon after the release of Run The Jewels 2, one of their fans jokingly came up with the idea that El-P should remix the project using cat sounds. Well that joke rapidly became a reality and a successful Meow The Jewels Kickstarter campaign was started that raised over $65,000. Some incredible producers came on board to contribute including the likes of Just Blaze, Alchemist, Prince Paul, Gaslamp Killer, Baauer and more.
First came Meowrly by Boots, which was premiered on the group’s WRTJ Beats1 radio show. Mass Appeal Records just dropped the feline remix to Oh My Darlin’ (Don’t Cry) by Just Blaze, appropriately called Oh My Darling Don’t Meow and frankly speaking it’s incredible. Who thought you could make such amazing with cat sounds? Listen to it below and let us know what you think; it certainly has got us excited for what else is to come from Meow The Jewels.
